 Tax clerkship without LL.M.?

Apr 6, 2009, 10:47 AM

Do any of these judges hire clerks who don't have a tax LLM?

 I doubt it.

I highly doubt it. Most of these guys either have a tax LLM or big law firm experience.

 Possible without Tax LLM

A tax LLM is a definite boost, but it's possible to get hired without one. I got hired with no tax LLM and only summer associate experience at a big firm. Know of at least one other hire with similar credentials. Bottom line, judges are looking for a commitment to tax. It's easy to demonstrate this with a tax LLM, but there are other ways.

I have been trying--off and on--to catch up with you for several years. I was cleaning out some files and ran across one of your presentations--done in 1997 when we were providing seminars for CSU. I "Googled" you and--there you were!! I am SO impressed with all you've accomplished. I've been with USDA, GIPSA, Packers & Stockyards Program for 10+ years. If you have a personal E-mail, would love to catch up and get re-acquainted.

I am currently in my last year of law school and I am interested in clerking for a tax judge. I plan to get my LLM soon after I graduate. How can I clerk for U.S. Tax Judge?

 Tax Court clerkship

Getting an LLM helps in landing a clerkship, but it depends on where you get the LLM. Most clerks either went to Georgetown or NYU. If you go to Georgetown, I would highly recommend interning at the Court.

You might want to check out www.taxcourtclerks.com. I'm a former Tax Court clerk and I've posted some info there that's relevant. You can ask other current and former clerks of the Tax Court your questions there, too.

Most judges will consider you without an LL.M. in tax. You might want to check out a site started by a former clerk (ehem) called taxcourtclerks (the rest is pretty obvious). There's some more info there and you can ask current and former clerks your questions as well.
