Professional Career History:

Judge Scoles was born in Charles City, Iowa, in 1951. After earning a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa in 1973, he taught math and coached for three years. Judge Scoles then attended the University of Iowa College of Law, receiving a J.D. in 1979.

After law school, Judge Scoles moved to Mason City, Iowa, where he clerked for the judges in the 2A Judicial District of Iowa. Following his clerkship, Judge Scoles practiced law in Mason City with the firm of DeVries, Scoles, and Price.

In October 1986, Judge Scoles was appointed as Iowa District Court Judge. He was named Assistant Chief Judge of the Second Judicial District in 1992 and served as Chief Judge from February 2005 until his appointment to the federal court.
