Magistrate Judge Orenstein was Law Assistant and Law Secretary to the Nassau County Court from 1966 to 1973. He then served as Principal Law Clerk to the Nassau County Supreme Court from 1974 to 1983, and Chief Clerk of the Nassau County Court from 1983 to 1985. In 1985 he became Chief Clerk of the Nassau County Supreme Court and remained such until his Federal judicial appointment.
