Multiple unpaid deferred associate positions are available with the Supreme Court of Kansas through the American Bar Association Judicial Division - Deferred Associates Judicial Clerkship Project. Job descriptions and information on how to apply is below the fold.


1. Supreme Court Central Staff Research Attorney Assistants:


Research motions and prisoner filings received by the Supreme Court; after some experience is gained, then also conduct research on issues raised in some of the more difficult petitions for review received by the court.


2. Research Attorneys (Interns) to various Justices of the Supreme Court of Kansas and to various Judges of the Kansas Court of Appeals:


Each attorney would be assigned to a specific justice/judge. Each attorney would receive regular case assignments, prepare prehearing memoranda summarizing the issues and recommending a resolution, assist with other research and writing assignments related to opinion preparation, and work directly with the assigned justice/judge.


3. Research Attorney (Intern) to the Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Kansas, through the Counsel to the Chief Justice and Research Attorney to the Chief Justice:


The attorney would receive case assignments, prepare memoranda summarizing issues and recommending a resolution, assist with other research and writing assignments related to issues/policies before the court, and work directly with research and other attorneys and the Chief Justice and other members of the court. The attorney would be subject to the supervision and direction of the Counsel to the Chief Justice and the Research Attorney to the Chief Justice.


4. Research Attorney (Intern) to the Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Kansas, through the Special Projects Attorney to the Chief Justice:


The attorney would receive special assignments, prepare memoranda summarizing issues and recommending a resolution, assist with other research and writing assignments related to cases pending before the court, including death penalty appeals, as well as general matters concerning policies and rulemaking. The attorney would be subject to the supervision and direction of the Special Projects Attorney and may also work directly with other attorneys for the court, the Chief Justice and other members of the court.


5. Staff Attorney, Office of Reporter of Decisions (Topeka):


Attorney would review circulating opinions of Supreme Court Justices and Court of Appeals Judges for accuracy: the facts, the grammar, the clarity, the law. Attorney would report corrections/suggested changes to the authoring judge’s office, discussing substantive suggestions with the authoring judge as required. Attorney would assist with printed and on-line publication of final opinions.
