 Holmes rumor

May 9, 2009, 5:56 PM

 Re: Holmes, Jerome A.

#4

The rumor is based on a notification posted on this site and a comment on another blog that he scheduled an interview with an applicant. Obviously we can't verify an anonymous comment (hence why it's listed as a rumor), so feel free to take it with a grain of salt, but we thought it would be useful to report.

 2010-11

May 17, 2009, 12:01 AM

 Re: Baldock, Bobby Ray

#5

Judge Baldock's clerks from Alabama and W&L will be serving two-year terms, so the demographic information is the same as that for the 2009-10 Term.

 2008-09 Term

May 17, 2009, 12:03 AM

 Re: Baldock, Bobby Ray

#6

Judge Baldock's clerk from Seton Hall didn't stay for 2008-09. The W&L listing is correct. Because the Judge's permanent clerk was on leave, he also had two, one-year term clerks for 2008-09. One was a recent grad from Regent, the other was a recent grad from Northwestern.

 Incorrect Data

May 19, 2009, 8:39 PM

 Re: Murphy, Michael R.

#7

Too bad this information is not correct. (I've checked a few other judges I know for sure, too.) I am friends with a Murphy clerk and that person's school is not listed above.

 Self-reported data

May 22, 2009, 12:01 AM

 Re: Murphy, Michael R.

#8

I'm sorry that the information for Judge Murphy and some other judges is not correct. Unfortunately, there are always going to be errors when you're dealing with self-reported data. As of this moment there are literally 2,026 law clerks in the database, and most of the district court information hasn't been imported yet, so even a modest 5% error rate would mean that 100 data points are wrong. In the future LCA might be up for sending questionnaires to chambers a la U.S. News, but in the mean time we have to put our trust in users like you, particularly when it comes to future hires.

 Demographics

May 22, 2009, 4:18 PM

 Re: Murphy, Michael R.

#9

The 08-09 Law Clerk Demographics for Judge Murphy are correct. The correct 09-10 Law Clerk Demographics are: St. Louis University 1, Syracuse University 1, and University of Utah 2. Judge Murphy is currently interviewing candidates for the 10-11 term.

 2010-11 clerks?

Jun 14, 2009, 7:00 PM

 Re: McConnell, Michael W.

#13

Anybody know what's going on with Judge McConnell's OSCAR listing? It was updated on June 4, 2009 to list four new clerkships (8/28/2010-8/28/2011). Does that mean that McConnell will be hiring for his successor? The news articles say McConnell is formally resigning in August (see http://www.sltrib.com/News/ci_12555212).

 Temporary Clerkship

Jul 12, 2009, 10:20 AM

#38

I've seen a one year temporary clerkship that starts in Sept. 2010. It says not eligible for federal benefits. Can they really not give you benefits at all? Or do they mean retirement benefits and life insurance would is fine with me? I'm guessing this is listed as temporary b/c his normal career clerk is on leave.

Which judge is offering it? Are you sure it even pays a salary? If it's a deferred associate position that could explain the lack of any benefits.

Jul 22, 2010, 3:51 PM

 Re: Tymkovich, Timothy M.

#132

Except it is impossible, literally, for a judge to fill spots through 3L online applications. OSCAR blocks 3L applications from going out until September. Yes, judges may be filling slots through online apps, but if they are doing so, they are only filling the slots with alumni applicants. That said, the mere fact that Judge T's OSCAR profile says he prefers online apps does not mean he isn't taking paper apps from 3Ls on the side. Lots of judges take that approach.

Thanks! Any intel on Tymkovich, O'Brien, Lucero, Kelly, Hartz, or Murphy? Are any of these judges particularly active (or passive) during oral argument? Does anyone have any insight into what clerkships with these judges might be like (aside from the aspects all appellate clerkships have in common)?

why do you equate "most active at oral argument" with "best to clerk for"?

I don't, necessarily. But for me personally, it would be a significant factor in terms of my enjoyment of the experience. Do you have any thoughts on my question?

In the Tenth Circuit, hiring off-plan is the rule, not the exception. It's still best to call chambers directly to find out.

Briscoe: brisk and businesslike. Holloway: old-world courteous. McKay: usually in California. Seymour: court’s most chic. Baldock: 10th Circuit jester. Ebel: does trial work. Kelly: knee-jerk conservative. Lucero: rarely in chambers. Hartz: avoid if possible. O’Brien: doesn’t like elites. Tymkovich: likes to ski. Gorsuch: faux-folksy taskmaster. Matheson: nice guy, maybe?

Agree with all of #206's assessments. If I could do it over again, I would have clerked for Tymkovich. Also would add that Matheson is probably a great boss (knew him from before).
