Circuit Judge (Active)

2011-12 Hiring Status:

Unknown

Chambers:

Fairbanks, AK

Clerk Types:

Career Clerks:  0
Term Clerks (1 Yr):  3
Term Clerks (2 Yr):  0

Know Before You Apply:

Although listed on OSCAR, Judge Kleinfeld strongly prefers paper applications, and requires that applicants include their LSAT score in their application materials.

Rather than requiring applicants to travel to Alaska to interview, Judge Kleinfeld or one of his clerks typically does an initial screening interview via phone--in which substantive questions are asked--followed by an in-person interview or dinner in San Francisco.

Does not follow the hiring plan. No objection to law student applications toward the end of the second year, though action may be delayed until grades are available. Applicants may send in their applications without recommendation letters if their schools follow the plan.

 Kleinfeld really going early?

May 23, 2009, 6:19 PM

2010 Cycle #1

Kleinfeld has a special dispensation to interview a couple of weeks before everyone else because of his location in Alaska. I find it hard to believe he went off plan after trying so hard to make the plan work for him.

 Not technically off plan

May 25, 2009, 12:42 AM

2010 Cycle #2

The guy who reported the Kleinfeld interview is an alumni applicant, so technically Kleinfeld wouldn't be going "off plan" by interviewing him, since the plan's timetable only applies to law student applicants.

 Kleinfeld is Off Plan

Jun 22, 2009, 10:41 PM

2010 Cycle #3

Kleinfeld is off plan. He's explained why in Howard Bashman's "How Appealing" blog. http://howappealing.law.com/20q/2003_05_01_20q-appellateblog_archive.html#200242242 "I don't follow the law clerk hiring plan, because it is impractical for Alaska. I hire before, during, and after the officially stated times. As a practical matter, I now expect to do much of my hiring during the summer following second year and during the fall of third year. Applicants applying in advance of the law clerk hiring plan shouldn't wait on recommendations from their professors before sending applications. "The reason I don't follow the plan is that it would be too great an imposition on an applicant to make them travel to Fairbanks, Alaska for an interview, so I squeeze in a very few interviews when I am Outside on calendars. Often the interview is a long dinner at a good restaurant. The timing of my calendar trips and the sparseness of interview slots requires that I spread them out more than the hiring plan allows for. Also, I make better judgments on whom to hire when I can spread out the decisions and hire the law clerks one at a time."

Northwestern grad, maybe not Chicago 3L

Sep 8, 2009, 12:03 PM

2010 Cycle #19

I can also confirm that Kleinfeld recently hired a Northwestern ALUM (not 3L) for 2010-11. I don't know if that means he didn't hire a Chicago 3L, but the timing would be peculiar if he hired both so close together in time.

Clurker, please ban this Nesberto Wilson troll. For those not familiar with said troll, basically they periodically add new posts saying that "Nesberto Wilson" has been hired by this or that judge. None of the entries are accurate--though they all highlight the risk that some of the data here on LCA is inaccurate.

Only if you enjoy spending your winters in -50 F degree weather. Fairbanks is also a rather small town located eight hours away from the next major city. Cabin fever is highly probable. Is a 9th Circuit clerkship worth the torture?

9th Circuit clerkship experience is worth it's weight in gold. I could care less about senior status because I know the work will be interesting.
