2010 Cycle #5

He likes graduates, or people who were No. 1 in their class. Willing to hire from unconventional schools, but only the No. 1. His permanent clerk is a woman from U. of Texas at Austin. She's the only thing that keeps his hard working clerks sane. If you want a ton of experience, this is the guy.

Are we talking #1 as in THE one and only #1, or like the top 5 people? Also, what kind of stuff will grab his attention? How does his chambers sort through applications?

 Hiring Practices

2010 Cycle #9

I know several of his former clerks, and while Judge Bea certainly likes clerks to be near the top of their class, he's certainly hired outside of the top 5% before. That said, these individuals attended top tier (T14) law schools.

Judge Bea generally hires on plan. I have also heard that he interviews a larger applicant pool.

 Bea

2010 Cycle #21

Bea hasn't even started yet. Be prepared to work 70 hours a week if you get this clerkship though.

 70 hours/week?

Aug 29, 2010, 10:52 AM

2010 Cycle #22

The workload depends in large part on how active the judge is in the en banc process and whether the judge needs help with extracurricular activities such as speeches. 70 hours/week is perfectly plausible.

I know some clerks that have worked for him in the past. They all say the workload varies, and you don't always work a lot of hours. Although his clerks tend to work more than other clerks, he is still no Alex Kozinski.
